I was certified to teach CFS in 2009 by Rob Pincus. Since that time I have taught on a consistent basis to a wide variety of students, assistant instructed with Rob on occasion, filmed with Rob for the Personal Firearms Defense DVD series.

Some write up from past courses:
On 12/12/02009 I took a Combat Focus Shooting course at the Clark County Gun Club taught by Combat Focus Shooting Certified Instructor Jeff Varner. It was a very cold day with temps in the 30’s with the ground frozen. We had a small class of only 6 students, which I liked because I never felt as is if Jeff Varner was too far away and had a good handle on things.
I have been to many shooting courses taught by nationally known instructors and during this course I was not disappointed. I appreciated how the class was geared to the reality of a sudden in your face gun fight. I have been a student of armed conflict all of my life and have been in some kind of uniform carrying a firearm to defend my country and community for over 21 years and it is very hard to train the mind and body to respond to sudden violence outside of it’s natural tendencies from the autonomic nervous system (ANS). This class takes this into mind and works with the body’s response to gain the maximum advantage of the ANS response so that you can effectively respond with the tools at hand to a lethal threat. I also liked the fact that the class was not as concerned with making small little groups on paper, that hits in the upper thoracic cavity were acceptable. This class was designed for street gun fighting.
Jeff Varner was a good instructor and had a good grasp of the materiel he was teaching, although at times he was a little too fast while he was talking. Jeff Varner was enthusiastic and held the classes attention throughout the day, even in such tough weather conditions. The class had wide range in terms of shooting experience and weapon systems and Jeff Varner held a safe class, considering the high tempo of drills we participated in.
At the end of the class we held a debrief, which I felt was good because some of the drills and the mindset behind them needed to be reinforced. I had a good time and feel that my gunfight skills have been improved. I plan on taking another course and bringing my wife along next time as well.

A week after taking Massad Ayoob's Mag-40 class, it was time to reholster and take another one. This class, titled Combat Focus Shooting, was located in Vancouver, WA and was instructed by Jeff Varner. It was a one day class from 9-5 and managed to shoot 500 rounds in that time frame. I had taken this class once before as a 3 day course with Rob Pincus, but I figured it's always good to touch up and refine my skills. I had a wonderful time and was very glad I took this class. With the shooting ranges around here, there are not a whole lot of opportunities to do a "figure 8 drill" and shoot at multiple targets or draw from the holster for that matter. Jeff is a fabulous instructor and if you ever have the opportunity to take the course from him...do it! His email is varnerjr@gmail.com to find out more about his upcoming classes! And thanks to Jeff, (taken from Soteria Leathers blog)
Regarding Combat Focus Shooting instruction by Jeff Varner,
I've owned and shot, rifles and handguns, most of my life. In the past few years I've shot more regularly and recently I've been going through 500 to 1,000 rounds of handgun ammunition a week at a couple of different ranges with the idea of becoming a better shooter to protect myself, my family and friends, should the need arise. If attacked by an 11"x17" piece of paper while standing behind a solid bench I would certainly be in my element, calm, cool and mechanical.
I had plenty of trigger time but it was time to get out of the cubicle and when I heard about a local CFS class I had to check it out. It was great. The techniques and principles are simple and practical and after one 8 hour class my confidence in my ability to assess a situation, potentially draw and fire, as safely as possible, at a target while moving under duress is greatly increased. A person cannot possibly become proficient at defending themselves or others with static range practice alone and the CFS class offers you a series of realistic drills, practices and instruction that will make you a more efficient and confident shooter.
I carry frequently and have never felt as safe and comfortable with a loaded weapon on my person as I am now.
I took CFS from Jeff Varner at The English Pit and was not expecting to learn as much as I did. I've never taken a formal class so I was a bit apprehensive and I had no experience drawing from a holster. Needless to say it didn't matter. The CFS is extremely intuitive and keys in on your natural reactions in a critical incident. Jeff knew just how to bring the best out of each student and just when to make a joke and keep it real. It's obvious he knows what he is doing and is able to teach what he knows and believes.I would recommend this class to anyone of any skill or experience level.
